This
course provides an introduction to art from prehistoric times to the
present. While
examining
the role that the visual arts have played in the development of the worldÕs
cultures,
the student is exposed to a wide variety of artistic media. (CSU) (UC) (Degree
Credit)

Description
Three hours lecture, image presentation, and/or discussion per week plus 15 minutes per week in an art gallery or museum.
This
course provides an introduction to the visual arts in a variety of roles and
concepts through history.
Instructional
Objectives
Upon
completion of this course students will be able to do the following:
-Identify
artists, individual artworks, and styles as they relate to the overall
tradition of art.
-Analyze
formal elements and how they relate to the conceptual approach of an artwork.
-Distinguish
between artistic styles, movements, and artistic approach.
-Discuss
artwork and artists with a vocabulary that utilizes an artistic tradition.
-Identify
mediums used in the creation of artworks.
Requirements
-Attend
class. Students are expected to arrive on time and leave only when class is
over.
-Bring
all needed materials to class.
-Complete
outside assignments.
-Participate
in discussions.
-Look
at actual work in museums and research artists brought up in class.
-Question
anything.

editions obviously being cheaper and available in used bookstores.

Instructional
Methods and Content
The
semester will be broken up into three major themes:
-Living
with Art
We
will start by asking, ÒWhat is art?Ó and try to answer that question by looking
at what artists physically do, the themes they explore, and the aesthetic
repertory they utilize. (Chapter 1
- 5)
-Art
Mediums
For
the second part of class we will look at a variety of mediums used in the
creation of art from drawing to digital.
We will also look at how the choice of medium affects the overall
concept of a work of art. (Chapter
6 - 13)
-Arts
in Time
The
final part of the class will be focused on art through times from cave
paintings to artists working in their studios as we speak. We will talk about their influence on
the traditions of an individual culture and the art world as a whole. (Chapter 14 - 22)

- Tests 25%

½% - Class Participation
-There
will be a midterm and a final exam each worth 40 points for a total of 80 points.
-There
will be two quizzes each worth 20 points for a total of 40 points.
-There will be in paper due worth 20 points.
-Class
participation is graded on what your influence is on the learning environment
of the classroom with discussion note taking, and physically being here. Class participation is worth 20
points.
-If
you add it all up you get a total of 160 points for the semester
